At The Movies

COP OUT - Directed by Kevin Smith, this film stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as two NYPD cops. If this looks and feels like your typical "buddy cop" movie from the 80's that's because it tries to be. There's plenty of cheap jokes and lots of action here, and the movie is even complete with a soundtrack that's right out of BEVERLY HILLS COP (or maybe FLETCH.) There are some moments here that made me chuckle, but that's about it. This is a poor movie, and it's a shame with a cast list that includes Willis and Morgan. This movie should be a lot better than it is.

LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS - I took Ben to see this movie several weeks ago. It's based on the popular children's books about the "Guardians of Ga'hoole." The story revolves around two owl brothers who are on opposite sides of good and evil. As the war takes a dark turn the peaceful owls seek out to find the "Guardians," a mysterious band of warrior owls who some think don't really exist. The animation here is beautiful at times. We saw it in 3D and it was worth it. Ben really seemed to enjoy it, and I did as well. Good movie.

THE OTHER GUYS - This movie stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as two New York detectives who always come second fiddle to two other "rock star" detectives who always get the glory. Looking for their own time in the spotlight the two get wrapped up in a case involving a shady capitalist. As you might expect Will Ferrell brings plenty of laughs here. But what surprised me most was all the laughs from the supporting cast. Wahlberg is equally funny here, and Michael Keaton is hilarious as the captain. This movie isn't as great as ANCHORMAN, but it's one of Ferrell's better films in recent time. Very funny!

PRINCE OF PERSIA - This movie is based on a popular series of video games, and stars Jake Gyllenhaal. Gyllenhaal is a young prince on the run for a murder he didn't commit. After meeting a a princess the two discover a mysterious dagger which can turn back time. Together the two must stop the forces of evil from gaining possession of the dagger. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, there's lots of eye candy and special effects here to keep you entertained. There's also a strong effort here to mold this into a new PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise. But all the effects in the world can't turn Gyllenhaal into Johnny Depp, and that's why this movie ultimately fails. This movie went WAY over budget when it was being made, and after all that money spent the film still doesn't have any personality. It looks great, but the story is dull and the performances are souless. Disappointing.

CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM: SEASON 6 - Larry David brings more craziness and lunacy with another season of CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. After 6 seasons this show still makes me laugh. Highly recommended.
