Schloss Lenzburg

Last weekend we took a short drive west to the Swiss village of Lenzburg.  There's an old castle there called Castle Lenzburg (Schloss Lenzburg) that sits on top of a hill overlooking the village below.  On the day we went they had a "renaissance festival" kind of thing going on.  Normally I'm not interested in renaissance festivals and medieval recreations.  But I have to admit...when you're at a renaissance festival that's in a real medieval castle it's a lot of fun.

The castle was by far the most interesting I've seen in Switzerland.  The earliest known history details the "Count of Lenzburg" living here during the Middle Ages.  Later on in the 1300's the castle became a part of the Hapsburg empire by way of marriage.  These days the castle is a museum, complete with a restaurant and a kids' play area.

We had a fun time at the festival.  The kids got to draw pictures with real feathered quills, and then seal them with wax seals.  Once inside we toured some of the interior rooms, and we found the kid's play area, where Ben and Megan got to dress up in royal outfits.  The kids' favorite part of the day was trying on all the knight armor, helmets, swords, etc.  We couldn't believe how heavy everything was.
