Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Day 1

Last weekend we took a trip to Dubai.  Since we first arrived in Switzerland Jenny and I have discussed doing a trip to the Middle East.  Jenny has been to Dubai before on business, but for me and the kids it was our first time to Dubai, and our first time to the Middle East.

Dubai is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates.  It has a population around 2 million, with half of the population being Indian.  In fact, about 71% of the city's population consists of foreigners and expatriates.  The city as we know it today has only been around for 15 years.  It's very new and cosmopolitan, and for being a Middle Eastern country it's very "western" and open.  Several men and women cover themselves in traditional Middle Eastern attire, but if you are visitor to the country you can dress normally (as long as it is conservative and appropriate.)

We stayed at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, and right next to the hotel is a water park.  So with the temperature in the 100's the first thing we did was get wet and slide down some water slides.  The kids loved it.  Later on we took a cab downtown and went up to the top of the Burj Khalifa tower, which is the tallest tower in the world.  It's over 2700 feet tall.  The views were amazing.  After that we went back down to the ground and got some dinner and watched the dancing fountains, which sit at the base of the tower.
