Last weekend we drove north to Stuttgart, Germany for a quick visit. We had heard about the Mercedes and Porsche car museums, so we decided to check them out, and in the spirit of the season we also paid a visit to the Christmas Market downtown.
Saturday was a full day. We started the day at the Mercedes Museum, which is in a very contemporary looking building. The entire museum showcases the history of the Mercedes line as it progressed through history. So the museum feels more like a historical museum than a car museum. It was interesting. Later in the day we found an "english-speaking" movie theater, so we had to check it out. We ended up seeing "Frozen," and it was good. But I think we enjoyed the overall experience more. No subtitles on the screen, no intermissions, no assigned seating, and the kids even got free popcorn. It was by far the best movie experience we've had in Europe. Then at night we took the train into downtown to check out the Christmas Market. Last year we went to a Christmas Market in Munich, Germany, but this one was so much bigger and better. It was fun.
The next day we visited the Porsche Museum. The kids had a blast looking at all the cool cars, and of course they had to sit in one. The museum was also housed in a very contemporary building, which made the cars really stand out.
Anyway, it was a quick weekend trip to Germany, but fun. Normally we go to the European cities and drag the kids around looking at all the old buildings and churches and things, so we all enjoyed doing something different. Stuttgart is one of Germany's bigger cities, but we found it to be more contemporary than we thought. I assume most of the historical buildings were bombed and destroyed during the war, so that's probably why most of the city seems updated.
