On our last full day in Austria we toured the city of Salzburg. To Europeans Salzburg is famous for being the birthplace of Mozart. But to Americans however the city is also known for being the place where some of the scenes from "The Sound of Music" were filmed.
We spent the day walking around the old town area, we toured Mozart's boyhood home, had lunch and did some shopping, toured the Hohensalzburg Fortress, and paid a visit to Mirabell Gardens. Some old towns in Europe are dark and cramped, but Salzburg is airy and bright. All the buildings are clean and freshly painted, and several of the squares are wide and open. It's a nice city to spend some time in.
Overall, we enjoyed our time touring Austria. The people are very friendly, there's lots of mountain scenery, and everything is very affordable.
