About 2 weeks ago we rode the train down south to the village of Lugano. Lugano is a town in the southern most section of Switzerland, and it is a popular tourist area for the Swiss. It's a nice little town on the shores of Lake Lugano, surrounded by beautiful mountains. It's a beautiful setting. The predominant language in the town is Italian, due to its close proximity to Italy, which made communicating a little tricky at times (we know a little German and French, but not Italian.) We've been meaning to get down to Lugano ever since we moved to Zurich, but the main reason we traveled there right now was to meet my friend Mike and his wife Kim, who were in the middle of a 2 week trip through Europe. We all got together and walked around the town a bit, and we took a nice boat ride across the lake. When we weren't touring the town we were pretty much just chilling out by the pool and letting the kids play. Another interesting thing we experienced was taking a stroll across the border into Italy. Right next to our hotel was the Italian border and the town of "Campione D'Italia." Campione is unique in the fact that it is an Italian town within the Swiss canton of Ticino. So it's an interesting mix of Italy and Switzerland. During our stroll we discovered an old church with a beautiful cemetery filled with crypts. The graves were elaborately decorated for families and loved ones from the surrounding village. Overall, Lugano is a beautiful place. I wouldn't say it's a must see if you want to see historic city centers and "old Europe," but if you're looking for a nice place to relax and unwind this is the perfect place.
