We got up the next morning and took a cab over to the Vatican for our second guided tour. Our guide "Serena" was great. She walked us around the St. Peter's Cathedral, the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican Museum, and more. We're not catholic, but I admit this place is incredible. St. Peter's Cathedral is the largest cathedral in the world. Supposedly you can fit 2 football fields inside. Up until this point I always thought Notre Dame was the most beautiful cathedral I had seen in Europe. But then we stepped into St. Peter's and we were struck by it's enormity and elegance. The cathedral is named after St. Peter, who's tomb lies underneath the center of the sanctuary. As I mentioned we also toured the Sistine Chapel (the Pope's private chapel). The chapel is beautiful, but it's rather small, and it was packed with people. There's also no pictures allowed in the chapel, so you'll have to go online to find pictures of it. Serena also took us around the Vatican Museum, which reminded me of the Louvre in Paris, and endless maze of corridors filled with priceless antiquities.
Later on we had lunch at the Piazza Navona, and took some pictures by the fountain. Then from there we trekked through narrow alleyways in search of the historic "Trevi Fountain," and the "Spanish Steps." Legend has it that if you throw a coin into Trevi Fountain you will return to Rome someday, so the kids got to do that.
