At The Movies

THE SHIELD: SEASON 7 - Season 7 marks the final season of this great show. In short - this show deserves to be in the same conversation as other great shows like THE SOPRANOS, LOST, BREAKING BAD, and THE WIRE. It is so good. It's one of those shows that simply gets better and better from season to season. If you've never seen this show I highly recommend you rent the first season and give it a chance. Great show!

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS - Woody Allen wrote and directed this film about an aspiring writer in Paris. When he walks the streets of Paris at night he finds himself traveling back in time to Paris in the 20's. He shares drinks with Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Salvador Dali, etc. This is one of Allen's better films in recent years. Plus, it's got some great shots of Paris.

THE NEXT THREE DAYS - Russell Crowe stars in this film about a husband trying to prove his wife's innocence. When his wife gets convicted of murder and sent off to jail Crowe spends all his time and energy trying to get his wife released from jail. But when things take a turn for the worst Crowe spends three days trying to break his wife out of jail. All in all this film is pretty laughable. In reality the story would be over in about 20 minutes. But hey...that's Hollywood.

SEASON OF THE WITCH - Nicolas Cage is a Knight Templar back in the time of the Crusades and the plague. But when he quits the knighthood he comes in contact with a supposed witch who is suspected of causing the plague. After she is imprisoned he agrees to escort her out of the lands, but she will try to get him first. This movie isn't great by any means, but it wasn't that bad either. A fun rental. Kind of goofy...but fun.

HARRY POTTER: THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PARTS 1 & 2 - In order to milk the franchise for every last bit of revenue Warner Brothers released the final Harry Potter book as 2 separate movies. Don't get me wrong...the final book is great. But I would have enjoyed these two movies if they were put back together in one film. The first movie just takes forever to go anywhere, but the second film is much better. I did enjoy however Ralph Fiennes' performance as Voldermort. This was by far his best performance in the franchise. Anyway, these films were okay. But give me Hobbits any day.

GREEN LANTERN - I caught this movie on the plane over from the U.S. to Switzerland, so I was just kind of stuck in my seat...forced to watch this train wreck. I remember Ben wanting to watch this movie at one time. No way. Not only is it too dark for him...he would lose intelligence by simply watching it.

COWBOYS & ALIENS - I also caught this one on the flight from the U.S. to Switzerland...and I enjoyed this one a lot more. It's not great by any means...and it's not really a western. But I did enjoy the western "feel," and Harrison Ford gives a typical solid performance. Fun movie.

THE BURROWERS - Take one part "TREMORS," throw in some "ALIENS," and toss it all into a western. That's what you have here. A group of cowboys come in contact with some creatures burrowing underground and killing people. It's not good enough to spend money on at the theater, but this one made for a pretty good rental.
