From The Shelf

THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE - Originally published in 1934 by James M. Cain this novel basically created the "crime noir" genre. Like the fellow classic "The Maltese Faclon," "Postman" is a world of crime, corruption, anti-heroes, and fast women. In "Postman," we follow the character of Frank Chambers as he stumbles into a rural diner somewhere in California. There he meets the owner of the diner and his wife Cora. After that it's practically love at first sight between Frank and Cora, and the two devise a plan to get rid of Cora's husband. But as the title of the book suggests...when you make a deal with the devil expect the devil to return one day to collect. I really enjoyed "The Maltese Falcon" when I read it a few years ago, so I was naturally curious about this one. This is a cool noir story, and it was hard to believe it was written in the early 30's. At times it just feels like a book that was written in today's time. Anyway, I enjoy "crime noir" novels, and this was a good one.
