Greece - Day 5

On our 5th day we left Chania and drove east to the main city of Heraklion.  Heraklion is the largest city on Crete and is its main urban area.  Along the way we stopped in Knossos, which is the ruined city of King Minos from ancient times.  The palace is supposedly where the story of "Theseus and the Minotaur" originated (the Minoans who lived here believed the "labyrinth" was directly under the palace.)  Fortunately we didn't see the Minotaur, but the kids were on the lookout for him.  Knossos was cool to see, but in our opinion it was not as great as Pompeii in Italy.  The main criticism of Knossos is the archaeologist who first excavated it also "restored" many of the structures you see, and restored and reproduced many of the murals and frescoes.  So you're left wondering what is authentic and what isn't (where at Pompeii everything is authentic and preserved.)  Anyway, after our visit to Knossos we checked into our hotel in Heraklion and walked around the city.  The kids got to try some chicken gyros and we took a walk along the water and watched the sunset.  The sunsets in Greece are pretty amazing.
