Greece - Day 6

On our next day we took a ferry from Crete to the island of Santorini.  The island is famous for its white buildings mounted on its rocky cliffs.  Santorini is simply beautiful.  This was Jenny and I's second time to the island, and of course it was the first time for the kids.  They were completely blown away by the scenery.  The island is actually a "caldera," and in the center lies a dormant volcano.  Long ago the island was round, as you can make out from the map above.  Then the volcano erupted and half of the island sunk into the sea.  That's why many of the cliffs literally look like they were cut in half with a huge knife.  So nowadays the island looks like a crescent.  We checked into our hotel in the town of Fira, which is in the center of the island.  The kids were thrilled to see we had our own hot tub.  Shortly after we checked in a cold front came through and brought lots of clouds and some rain.  But it was fine.  The kids jumped in the hot tub and had a great time.
