Friday morning we toured Loretto Chapel, a block or two from the plaza in Santa Fe. For those of you who don't know, the main attraction to the chapel is the "Miraculous Staircase," and the legend behind it.
To paraphrase, the sisters of the chapel wanted a staircase built so they could access the second floor loft (instead of using ladders). They prayed and prayed to Saint Joseph (the patron saint of carpenters) for someone to help them. On the 9th day of their prayers a carpenter appeared at the church looking for work, and said he could build a staircase for the sisters. After months of work he completed the staircase that is there now, and soon disappeared without pay or thanks. No one knows who the man was, and some believe it was Saint Joseph himself. Not only that, but the staircase itself was innovative in design way ahead of its time. There are two 360 degree turns with no visible means of support. Also, no nails were used, only wooden pegs.
