From The Shelf

GORKY PARK - This is a mystery thriller written by Martin Cruz Smith in 1981...later turned into a movie in 1983 (which I haven't seen.) The story starts out rather simple. 3 dead bodies are discovered frozen in the snow in the middle of Gorky Park in Moscow. An investigator by the name of Arkady Renko is called upon to solve the murder, but the more he digs the bigger the mystery becomes. While the story is rather straight forward here the setting is anything but. Most of the story takes place in Moscow during cold war Russia, which makes the novel much more intriguing. Renko has to fight his government's own corruptness and bureaucracy to solve the murder. However, when Renko has to travel to New York City he soon discovers American capitalism can be just as corrupt. The novel only gets a little political near the end, and some of the plot starts to dip a little. But the first two-thirds of the novel are great, and the open really comes out and grabs you. Overall, I thought it was a good read.
